Its my understanding that there are some records that there was an actual person, though I doubt many of the things that have been attributed to him. There is no corraboration for any of the important attributions made to him. Only that somebody by that name existed at that time in about that region. Mohammed is a far better verified individual in history - aside from all that talking to angels business -, he did succeed in conquering large swaths of Arab lands and setting up a semi-successful theocracy.
