Try Robert Jordan's "The Wheel of Time" series. Fantasy, but well done. It's most interesting idea is that of a individuals being threads in the grand fabric of reality -- and that, further, some threads *choose* to play a pivitol role, while other are *choosen* by the weaver (aka a pantheistic god)
