Here is a proposal for Maxim #1:
All beliefs, statements, assertions, propositions, and yes, even
maxims, are provisional.
I think it is a good one to start off with because it fundamental,
non-intuitive, and tempers the rest of the list (whatever that
turns out to be). In a way, it embodies the scientific method in
that theories can never be proven, only improved. Any agreement?
dissent? suggestions? Or should I ask, does anyone believe it is
(provisionally :-) true? Hint: What about analytic statement?
