Good question, one with both an ironic and a serious side. The irony
derives from the fact that to some extent we know the answer because the
selection pressures you mention are happening right now, and part of the
purpose of Virus is to become a positive guiding force in this process.

Of course, the other side of this question is a very legitimate wondering
about what the result of all this change -- including Virus's role -- will
be. In that sense, the answer to this question may be the answer to whether
Virus will be successful in its "mission."
