virus: heresies

I think we tread on dangerous ground when speaking of adding a list of
heresies to the Church of Virus.

The Church of Virus is a great experiment, redefining the concept of
religion. When any meme gains momentum, it seems an innate desire to
control or define boundaries for the meme surface-- if we make a
statement that "the following ideas are wrong and will always be wrong",
we close ourselves to the possibility of new thought in that direction.

I agree that certain topics can run their course-- even to the point of
being hammered into the ground. We can become jaded to certain issues
(such as the definition of belief, which seems to have run dry of new
input)-- but to close the book on something by proclaiming it as a
heresy is shortsighted. It would be much more productive to simply say
"let's move on for now", and leave the possibilty of a new, as yet
unheard, resolution to the issue.

To paraphrase Noam Chomsky, to say I support free speech means that I
support the freedom of speech for ideas I don't agree with. Hitler was
all for freedom of speech-- as long as he agreed with what you said.
