Below is another example of the current warning
about increased local telephone rates for Internet
use. This is the third example in two days that has
appeared on a mailing list for my high school (ACS in
Beirut, Lebanon). It has a long prefix extolling the
virtues of the Internet - an illustration of how these
messages grow at the beginning (or end).

I suspect this is the "hottest" replicator we have seen
in the two years I have been on-line. After all, it purports
to protect the medium itself, or at least the pocket book
of the users.

In spirit it reminds me of a paper replicator
from a few years ago (1991). Titled "IMPORTANT NOTICE",
this warned that Madelyn Murray O'Hair (whose law suit
against school prayer was successful) was now submitting a
"petition with 27,000 signatures" to the FCC to "stop the
reading of the Gospel on the air waves of America."
The bottom of the letter was a petition addressed to the FCC
(mine was No. 2493 - presumably a number from the initial
mailing) protesting "any human effort to remove from radio
or television any program designed to show faith, God, or
a Supreme Being, . . ." Respondents were asked to make ten
copies and send them to friends and relatives.

I have an undocumented newspaper clipping about a rumor that a
movie was being shot in the US portraying Jesus as a homosexual.
It also mentions this petition, "now five years old," saying the FCC
has "received millions of letters, and only a Congressional
allocation of funds to the FCC to inform religious leaders of
the mistaken grass-roots campaign has slowed the flow of petitions and
calls to the FCC." Incidentally, according to a TV report a month ago,
Madalyn Murray O'Hair is a missing person.

Dear Sirs/Madams:

So much of technology tends to separate and isolate people in a society.
Now we have a communication technology which is changing all that. It is
drawing people together as nothing has since the beginning of the penny
post of the last century. The internet is probably the one technology
which can reduce tension, speed up the dissemination of information,
encourage business and profession pursuits, draw together new kinds of
communities, as well as be a major stabilizing force in communities
around the world.

My wife communicates daily with people on several continents with people
in her field. My son and his friends do their school research papers by
contacting top people in various fields throughout the world. In my
work, I am in daily contact people in several countries.

Please do not let the selfishness and parochial concerns of these
telephone companies impair or deminish the life enhancing, community
building force of the internet. I believe it is vital to America's
future place in the world to encourage in everyway possible this
communication phenomenon.

Sincerely,

M.L.Sacco, Fin. Dir.
