Just a few points:

but don't be a sucker. Examples of really successful pathological memes
would be: astrology, the beatitudes, colonialism ....

Colonialism was not pathological to its bearers, it was a highly
successfull symbiote.

Please note that rivers don't always branch ... there is the Colorado in
the grand canyon ... Rivers branch because at some point the bottom
becomes harder then the banks. This is the way the earth is set up and
not a
mathematical necessity.

Rivers branch when their path enters into a level or semi level area,
the composition of the riverbed will not stop or deter it for long.
Running water will eat through any known material if given time. The
Grand Canyon is not a good example, the earth there rose up beneath an
existing watercourse, that is somewhat of a rarity.

You are right that Darwin's explanation of mutation was a bit flawed ...

It is easy to criticize those who came before us, but we stand upon
their shoulders. Judge them lightly if you would have history treat you
so in turn...
