I have no problem with "working hypotheses" so long
as there is a good reason to believe them if they
are ever called into question. What do you call
the category of assumptions for which there is no
good reason?

Hope? Fantasy? BTW, I read that Freud when doing self-analysis asked his parents about important childhood memories he had and found that they remembered things differently than he did...he decided to accept that his patients subjective experiences (siilar to his own...or his parents) were "real" but based in fantasy. This makes for an interesting idea..."real fantasy".
