virus: KKK...

This weekend I was watching a KKK documentery. They claim that the
organization was founded by 6 men, with not goals of being what it is
today. It was a fraternity. The 6 men went about town dressed up in order
to attract curiosity, and then members. It was also founded previous to
the Civil War. While I don't know this for fact, I have found the History
channel to be pretty reliable (for event I know about, they do an
accurate job) I mentioned this to a friend who comes from Texas. She was
told, by KKK members, that it was founded by 6 generals (or some other
high ranking) from the South after the Civil war. If all the above is
true, then I would be willing to bet that (if it is not just a mutation of
history) this could have been an engineered meme to create a history for
Klansmen that is true to it's foundation. Any ideas? Anyone know some
information on the Klan?
