The third (recently added) type of meaning is the kind in "a flag
flown
at half mast means that someone important has died".

List

This seems to imply that a thing might be symbolized and that the
symbol might then change the effects expected through
"intent"...that is, someone dies, it is symbolized, the symbol
changes perceptions, the perceptions become the cause of yet
further symbolic interpretations. Would seem, then, that the
symbol might encode the intent and the environment...though, even
if the symbol is objectified (by using a flag), how inherent
within this objectified symbol is the meaning...the intent and
the environment?
