Just about the only thing good I have found from the psychological death
and "rebirth" is the ability to tell oneself "NO". One is born with the
life-force to say yes to everything... one also makes mistakes (which in
the positivistic sense of "development" in a more, more, more-- or "yes"
sense-- continue forever without the ability to undo). The ability to
stand outside of oneself as an authority figure might and tell oneself
"no" is the ability to undo past mistakes, to avoid repetitive cycles,
and to deny what might otherwise be logical.

The death of self (in a christian sense, for the church; in a social
sense, for the society) is a paradoxical cycle which says no and then
says no to "no" (opposition). Though in the long run "no" is a negation
of the life force (and would end in the mutual destruction of the entire
race and of any god as well), in the short run it may be the ability to
live through experiences that would cause immobility of others for fear
of death... it is also the *ability* to say no to the fanatical
destruction of another human life-- and the knowledge of death that
allows this decision (not to kill) to be put into action regardless of
the circumstances.

Having said all of this, I do not recommend the experience of self-death
nor of "rebirth"... and it seems to take only a very small determination
and spiritual awareness to come up with other solutions to a person's
inherent lack of ability to say yes to someone else. (and yes, I have
some classes in psychology).

To BrettMan35@webtv.net (Brett Robertson) and concerned others,
I enjoy your psychological analysis of the process of born again, have you
taken a course in psychology? You sounds like it. I like your interpertation,
it is coincident to my view of born again means killing your own past self:
Murder of your own self, as I would like to call it. To me, it is that process
of killing oneself psychological that most people can't bear to return to a
saner living. But if you dare to kill yourself, aren't you not fanatic enough
to kill for faith?
