Wait a sec, i dont know of any prophecies that aer set for the year 2000, the
Mayans and Aztecs, didnt use a callendar ever remotely similar to ours, so I
doubt very much that the year 2000 meant anything to them. No Christian or
Jewish prophecy has any relation to the year 2000 (Unless you use creative
math and history). Of course, I would love to see an example where the year
is called out. I think that it is much more likely that revisionist
historians have made some attempts to modify history to make them feel more
important in the scheme of things. So far, all I see and hear is just hype.

As for asking myself why so many people think something will happen - Well I
have two responses.

1. If 50 million people believe a foolish thing, it is still foolish
2. There is no doubt a great deal of memetic and capitalistic clout on the
line for the year 2000. Fearmongers can reap great rewards for making stuff
up that inspires fear, or gains devotees. Also, The pyramids are pretty and
all, but I have seen many an Engineer who is not so impressed with the
pyramids of Cheops or the Myan pyramids. People often think the things are
amazing, unfortunately, all the failed pyramids that came first are
conveniently ignored. The pyramids are a result of trial and error as much as
anything else. And so far, they have yet to predict anything that I am aware
of.
