The system of numbering years A.D. (for "Anno Domini", "in the year of Our
Lord") was instituted in the year 525 by the Roman abbot Dionysus Exiguus
(who was off by about 6 years in his indentification of the year of the
birth of Christ).
since this error was never corrected we're in year 2004. For a good source
