The Chinese were for a time centuries ahead of the west. It is a very
good question that I have asked myself before and for the Chinese at
least I believe it was the combination of two things: The belief from
Confucius that society should be stable (don't want new inventions
rocking the boat) and a huge deadening bureaucracy. Plus of course
famine, flood, and plague.
