NLP can be defined as "the study of subjective experience and what can
be learned from it"
It is readily testable in subjective experience; having learnt a little
about it its very easy to verify for yourself whether there is any
"truth" in what it suggests about how people structure reality.
When I first read about NLP I was interested but highly sceptical (being
a fairly hard nosed engineer amongst other things). Being curious, (and
carrying all those lovely useful science memes), I went out and tested
for myself, and was pleased to discover that yes, it does work... and it
is incredibly useful.
For example, you can easily determine the 'structure' of someones
strategy for doing something. If it is something useful (like a
motivation strategy that helps you get things done) you can install it
in yourself. If it is not useful (like a strategy for depression or
jealousy) you can make a change in the person's strategy and give the
person the choice of eliminating the problem.
One way of looking at it is that it allows you to examine and debug
mental software.
Criticising NLP because it has been misused by sleazebags is like
criticising science because "scientists make nuclear bombs".
If you see yourself as a curious scientist, I challenge you to find out
a bit more do some reading and experiment for yourself...
