Popular music is a zietgiest (sic?).
It represents what the majority of people feel like. In Britain there is a craving for depressing/realistic style music at the moment.
This type of music would not have been popular during the boom period in the '80's, just as bands such as ABBA and Culture Club were pop music then. Radiohead, The eels and the recent resurgence of Nirvana are all classed as popular music now, in 5 years time they will not be seen in the same light because this glum period in the world will (hopefully) be over.
Music itself is just a way of people being able to express themselves, the various charts are a way of showing how the people see life. Look back at recent history to see that the charts represent the very zietgiest that was around then.
Thats all I can say at the moment.
