When something happens that you don't like (or like), detachment is not
letting that event control your response. A detached person will let the
emotions wash over him like a wave, and respond or not respond in
accordance with purpose.

Dr. Albert Ellis, founder of cognitive therapy, said, "It's not our
feelings that get us into trouble. It's not even our reactions to our
feelings. What gets us in trouble is our reactions to our reactions."
