virus: Update on the search.

The following is a copy of a letter that I sent off to the "The 'Ask a NASA

In reviewing it, I fear that I might have been too succinct. My abruptness
might trigger a histameme reaction.

I have just finished a book by a Mr. Noone titled 5/5/2000.
In it, he speculated on a number of calamities that might
befall on the date of the planetary alignment.
Your web page does an excellent job of refuting a number
of his theories. There are a few things that you could clear
up, though. One of his speculations was based on the writings
of the Russian author, Velikovsky. According
to the big V, Venus wasn't formed as a planet. Originally,
around 4000 BC, Venus was a comet on a near-collision
with earth. As a result of this near-miss, the polar ice
caps, because of their weight, were shifted toward the equator.
As they shifted, their motion caused the very crust of the
earth to shift on the mantle that the tectonic plates rest on. The
implication of this calamity destroying an earlier civilization is
heavily weighed by Mr. Noone. In this manner, he explains that
the Great Pyramid was built by the survivors of this disaster.
Furthermore, the Great Pyramid was built as an observatory for future
generations to use, in order to predict the date of the
next occurrence of a polar ice shift. 5/5/2000 claims
that the title date is the date predicted by the Great
Pyramid. In addition, Mr. Noone thinks that all the
other pyramids were built afterwords, by the sub-culture
survivors of the disaster.

Contrariwise, my copy of Encarta 98 Encyclopedia reads:
"Egyptian pharaoh (circa 2638-2613 BC). Khufu was the
second king of the 4th Dynasty, also known as the Memphite
dynasty. The outstanding event of his reign was the construction
of the Great Pyramid at Giza, near Cairo."**

However, my CD-Encyclopedia also says:
"Many theories have been advanced to explain the purpose
of pyramids; the answer is simple: They were built to preserve
and protect the bodies of the kings for eternity."**

If this were in fact the truth, why are there air shafts
in the structure? Wouldn't those shafts admit fresh air,
and then destroy the mummy?

What do you think? Could the ice caps weigh enough to
actually shove the other plates out of the way?
