People like the Tofflers (authors of "The Third
Wave"... if I have the names correct) often study
trends and use the insight gained to predict future
liklihoods-- political changes, technological
advancements, fashion, etc. The difference between
this type of "prophecy" and the prediction of
religious "trends" (or trends in consciousness,
perhaps attributable to "self-continuation" or
consistency of "faith")... the difference is in the
underlying assumptions of spirituality and
materiality.

That the Tofflers might predict a new "wave" of
political change-- and that spiritualists might
predict a simultaneous destruction of self-
continuance-- only seems contradictory to the extent
that one favors political change and ALSO personal
stability. Disregarding the religious significance
of materialistic changes misses an underlying
consistency between the two.
